The Sweetest Balm For A Broken Heart.

Meet Sparrow, the loveliest of tiny things that has brought the sparkle back to My Only Girl. You may remember our most heart-rending little tragedy, still regretted today and every day.

She was worried about how she would feel, afraid she would be trying to replace Oz so soon, (she was adamant about no more black cats~that would just be too heartbreaking) but this only girl of ours needs something small and helpless to love. We all need some unconditional love in our lives, and as I know many of you know full well, the love of a pet is wholehearted, unreserved, and unlimited, and a perfect, pure balm to the tribulations of life.

Somethings just go together, and need no explanation, and a girl and her cat are one.

I am so sorry about Oz. We lost a beloved pet this summer as well. I am so sorry.

Sparrow looks like a beautiful, sweet little thing. I hope she (?) fits perfectly into your family.

I am off now to cook dinner with a big, goofy grin on my face. This makes me so happy!

What a perfectly lovely pair they make.

It's true that one cannot replace another but I think as humans we need other creatures in our lives. I have always had at least 1 cat in the house as well as my beloved dog Griffin and houseplants as well. It rounds us out. I think Sparrow will be well loved.

So true, a person needs unconditional love and pets are just the very best at that!

Hello Ciara...I am so happy your girl has a new kitten to love. Oz will remain forever in her heart but now she has a darling kitten in the "now." Susan

Such a sweet little kitten. In no time, she will become as special as Oz. But it's a very brave and hard thing to start over giving your heart away.

Sparrow is such a darling little kitten. Yes, there is a special bond between a girl and her cat!

I came back and read your post about Oz several times, but I don't think I ever commented at the time because I couldn't find the right words. I was so sorry for you all, and especially your daughter. I've lost many dear cat friends over the years, and the ones I lost as a girl were some of the hardest to bear. My sister had to say goodbye to her beloved dog Summy last week, and it tore all of our hearts.

You are so right when you say that pets are a pure balm. I can't imagine a life without them. Sparrow looks like the sweetest of friends. Your photos tell the story that every girl who has ever loved a cat knows by heart. Pure joy.

xoxo Gigi

P.S. I just knew you were a Smiths girl, too. How wonderful that we were listening to those same songs a sea apart--and that we still are!

I understand her not wanting another black cat. I feel the same way about pets I've lost. Each one is unique and we want to keep it that way. Oz will never be replaced. This new cat will be it's own special pet with it's own different personality.

There is something so soothing and healing about looking after animals, just sitting quietly petting a sleepy cat is possibly one of the nicest things in the world.

A friend directed me to your blog a while back - I've really enjoyed it - beautiful photos, lovely words, a lovely sense of wonder and reverence for life and the world.
Its like a space for reflection on the interweb. Keep up the good work!

I am so glad your daughter has a new friend! Oz will never be forgotten but I am sure he would approve. Have you ever read 'The 9 lives of Frankle the cat'? Or 'Cats in the Belfery'? Can't remember the authors, I am sure if you google it a name will come up. They are very good books about the friendships between cats and men. =)

It's so good that our hearts can still open to new loves after the hurt of having an old love move on.
Such a lovely picture of the daughter and her little sparrow.

Sparrow is so sweet! The best thing about love is its expandability. It is possible to love Sparrow and still love Oz and the memories of him as much as ever.
Cheers and a warm welcome to your newest family member.
