Twilight Fever.

So, I survived Easter. Not a speck of chocolate passed my lips. It was easier than I imagined it would be. I just tuned it out of my consciousness. (And it helps when your SuperMum makes a cake with you in mind). A few of you asked the reason I can't eat it, and the reason is Candida. A nasty advanced form of it that I usually try not to talk about, simply because I have no doubt my friends are bored silly, as it comes up again and again. Any time I sit down with friends and there's food involved in our gathering, it comes up. I get bored talking about it too.
So in a nutshell: no sugar, gluten, dairy, yeast or caffeine. I struggle with caffeine these days, but I'm getting there. The rest is possible. Most days.

So before you feel sorry for me just let me say it doesn't work that way. I feel so awful when I eat any of the above that it's just not worth it. But there are always days when it truly is a struggle. But my treat to myself is the not eating it. It's really the only way I can think about it.

So I was amused by something that came to mind over the last week. The older two discovered Buffy awhile back, and I've really enjoyed reliving that with them. But more recently we have been taken over by *Twilight* fever in our house. Between endless watching of the movie, to fighting over who gets to read the next book, it's been all-consuming. To the point where today I sent them out into the sunshine for a change and what do they do? They don baseball caps, find a big stick and a ball and set to playing baseball. Vampire style. They even cranked up the stereo and had that song from that scene on loop. For an hour. (Sorry. No links for either song or scene as they were all dreadful...)

It's very sweet.

But what came to mind as I watched the movie, yet again, was how I sympathised with poor Edward. There I was, the scent of chocolate filling the room... oh I was tormented. But then I considered how he struggles with his desire to kill and taste the blood of his beloved Bella, yet he loves her so completely. I felt better. Honestly...

(And if you haven't seen the movie, or read the book, then do. No matter what age you are.
If you've ever been in love.
Do...)

I will admit I got sucked into reading the Twilight series recently. I fought off the urge for quite a long time, thinking it was a preteen/teenager's book. But I was pleasantly surprised that I actually enjoyed the first three books (read all three in about 6 days). Unfortunately, the fourth book was not as good. It still sits here, about a quarter read. I may finish it someday. I enjoyed the movie too. I think I am a teenage girl at heart. :)

I teach children's lit to college students who are planning to become teachers. They are all reading these books right now, so I'll be reading them, too, as soon as I have some weekends free! Even my hairdresser and my sister-in-law have told me I MUST read them. Now I can't wait!

The books are wonderful! I love the movie but I loved the books more. No chocolate in my house either but I do have three teenage girls who believe all boys should be Edward.

I've been meaning to check these books out, and must before I watch the film. :)
Well done for not giving in on the chocolate.

My friend Louise and I are consumed by it! I so wanted to be 17 again and have a vampire boyfriend!

I've only read the first book and am waiting for her to loan me the other ones. Saw the film on youtube, but I am so going to buy it!

What's funny is my 12 year Niamh isn't interested really.

Thanks for the recommendation re the book - will def try it before I watch the film.

I'm allergic to gluten and dairy and lots of other things too (causes eczema) but seem to manage ok with chocolate!! It's cows milk 'in the raw' that affects me the most. Find coffee affects me too so that's a rare treat. but well done for sticking to it so strictly, I tend to fall off the wagon quite often but manage to control it then with a few strict days.

AAAAAHHHH! So glad to read this post, Ciara!!! I, too, have been bitten! By Twilight and Edward! Have not yet seen the film but I have been averaging about 3 days per book. I slowed a little on the last, partly since it's longer (have about 80 pages left and will definitely finish tonight). Bought the third on Wednesday so I guess the average still holds... and am hosting my bookclub soon to discuss. Wish so much that you could come! Am brave now; will write about Twilight on my blog now, too... Ah, Edward... BIG *SIGH* You know, I think I was in love with him, myself for the first three books. Spellbound, certainly. And to think I ever scoffed!

(Bravo to you with chocolate; I have not been so strong. Have you looked into herbs, or minerals like zinc, copper, chromium, or molybdenum to help with the Candida?) xo

amazing recreation of the baseball scene.

i enjoyed the books in an angsty teenage way. was a bit embarrassed about it at first, but now that just about everyone else in the world is, so be it.

and though i didn't think i would, i enjoyed the movie. all the best of the book, with bella coming across as a much stronger character i think.

sorry about the chocolate, though i am proud to have stayed out of the girls baskets myself!

and boy do i wish i could get my leg up that high again ;-)

I think that is ballsy, taking it on so bravely. I have studied natural medicine and know all about the terrors of candida and feel for you. However it picked a tough and wise soul....xxxx

We love Twilight!! Your daughter's imitation of Alice pitching is fabulous. And we play the soundtrack all the time. My girls read the whole series to me out loud so that I could sew and still get the books "read." Can hardly wait for the next movie. Thanks for this...

Okay, I give. I have a friend who is so rabid for me to read that book, she even mailed me my own copy.
