Thoughts On Treasure.

Some days are a painful pinprick,
as though a tender blister bursting,
when my child's tiny hand rests on my knee
and I gaze at it and I remember it is not mine.

I am not the little child,
but the mother.

And those moments I am caught
and I see through their eyes,
something that was once so familiar,
and I am brought to stillness,
my heart undone.

When my own voice fails me,
and I hear theirs,
lilting, sweet and sure.

Their world certain and simple and yet so wondrous.

And I am filled.

I am filled.

Motherhood is indeed filling, and wonderful (well, most of the time!).
And it's good to appreciate the wonderful in life.
Beautiful words, as always, Ciara.

Indeed Ciara ,some parents truly don`t know when they are blessed , it hurts me when I hear parents moan about their kids...they should be on bended knee thanking God for them !

Lovely poem.

I like how it speaks to both what's shared and what's separate between your life and your children's lives.

(Unfortunately there are parents who see their children only as extensions of themselves and their own wishes and dreams, and not as little people who are very much a part of them but are developing into their own selves as well - which should be a beautiful process to behold, but instead produces mostly anxiety and anger.)

lump in my throat, Ciara. motherhood is so dang new to me, i am still caught up in the wonder of IT and of HIM. but it's wonderful to know that a few years down the road won't still ever make me take it for granted. i know my infertility struggle has pretty much guaranteed that. you put it so beautifully. but don't despair - the child you were is still within you and still so...apparent when i read your posts. your innocence and fascination with Life, its wonders. you are still that little girl, for sure...

Such beautifully expressed sentiment. It is so wonderful to watch our children growing into their own unique, independent selves.

A mother's view, but a view that should be adopted universally. How can we not love our children?

A beautiful post.

Someone was telling me lately that children stop playing aged round 10, so these are some very important years that remain to your children and mine, out in the fields with heads full of freedom and opportunity along with the escapees of our own inner children.

Making the decision to have a child is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body.

So true... you're words are wise.

It is hard to comment on such a poignant piece of writing without sounding too cliche, I wish I had your gift.

I hope you are getting over your winter blues.

That is just so lovely Ciara, I sense you are still the little child , in the mother's body ...and lucky everyone at milkmoon for that...

I've not been around but your last post made me smile not least because we DID get a bridget's cross home but have tried very subtly NOT to have it in the house....you know what those things are famous for!!!
